Ray Roberts, Filmmaker

What inspired you to become self-employed?

"There wasn’t one single source of inspiration. As a filmmaker, and especially a director, it’s not a career you can easily develop while working for someone else. It was the natural path."

Who would be your ‘dream client’, and why?

"I’d love to direct a commercial for Apple one day. I love the variety in their directed pieces and the freedom they give filmmakers to be creative."

What advice would you give to others who wanted to become self-employed?

"Remember why you’re doing it. Especially for filmmakers, it’s probably not for the money. Unless you have a rich daddy who works as a film producer, you won’t see a lot of money for a while. Never forget the dream and keep fighting for it."

What part of your work do you feel most proud of?

"I’ve been fortunate enough to tell the stories of Filipinos like me in my work. To be able to give opportunities for my underrepresented people both on screen and behind the camera in what is a very white-dominated industry is something I’ve very proud of."

What do you enjoy most about being self-employed?

"Honestly, it’s the fact that if I put in the work, I see it reflected in my revenue. It’s not just a pat on the back from my boss. I’m privileged to say my career is more than just income - it’s an expression of my creativity."

What has been the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a freelancer, and how did you overcome it?

"Surviving the first few years was tough. There were times when putting food on the table was a struggle. I wasn’t very business-minded and still don’t consider myself to be.

"But I kept following my passion and said yes to as many opportunities as I could. I think people recognize and respect authenticity when you’re following your dreams rather than just hustling."

What tools or resources are absolutely essential for you to do your work?

"Social media is vital. It was my education when I was younger and helped me build an audience for free. Even now, I believe every artist or business should focus on sharing their story on social media - you never know who might discover you."

How do you keep up with industry trends and continue learning and improving your skills?

"I watch films constantly. Not just recent ones, but also old films and international ones. The more variety, the better for your mind. Even films that get bad reviews have value you can learn from.

"Watching good filmmaking consistently only improves the quality of your own work."

Where can people find out more about you and your work?

"I’m most active on Instagram @RayRoberts and YouTube (YouTube.com/RayRoberts). You can also see more of my work on www.rayroberts.co/rayroberts"
