What inspired you to become self-employed?
I had been considering self-employment for a few months when I was made redundant. I wanted the freedom to choose when I worked, rested and played. I set up a coaching business. It failed so I went to work abroad as a holiday rep. When Covid struck in 2020, I was flown home having lost my place of residence, car and job so I began writing. I published my debut novel in November 2020 which is based on my life experiences. I enjoyed unleashing my creativity and have published two further adult novels and a children's book.
I balance my time between writing my own stories, helping others write theirs and running workshops or giving talks in schools, prisons and businesses.
Who would be your âdream clientâ, and why?
I couldn't pin this down to one client, but I love working with schools and prisons.
What advice would you give to others who wanted to become self-employed?
Be clear on why you want to run your own business, what you want to achieve from it and what problem do you want to solve for your client.
What part of your work do you feel most proud of?
My books and seeing the people I work with make both subtle and significant life changes.
What do you enjoy most about being self-employed?
Having the freedom to choose what I do and when.
What has been the biggest challenge youâve faced as a freelancer, and how did you overcome it?
Getting clients to pay for my services and books. It's a work in progress, but now I'm clear about what I enjoy doing and who I want to work with it's all coming together nicely.
What tools or resources are absolutely essential for you to do your work?
Laptop, pencil and paper.
How do you keep up with industry trends and continue learning and improving your skills?
I am currently doing a college course (Preparing to Work in Schools) to help me with my school workshops. We are always learning, even when we teach and I am always looking for interesting courses to undertake.
