What is Equipment Insurance?

  • Communication tools, such as desktops, laptops, mobiles, and tablets
  • Essential work equipment, such as graphic tablets and hairdressing equipment

Why Do Self-Employed Creatives Need Equipment Insurance?

Your equipment is the backbone of your creative process. Here are some reasons why insuring it is important:

  • High Replacement Costs - quality equipment is an investment. Insurance helps mitigate the financial strain of replacements.
  • Business Continuity - damaged equipment can halt projects. Insurance can mean minimal downtime so you can keep working and keep earning.
  • Peace of Mind - focus on your craft, knowing you are protected if something happens to your essential tools.
  • Accidents do Happen - no matter how careful you are things can get lost, damaged or stolen.

Factors Influencing Equipment Insurance Costs

There are several factors that can influence the cost of your equipment insurance:

  • The total value of your equipment - the more expensive your gear, the higher your premiums will be
  • Where you travel and use your equipment – at Mode Insurance we have two separate prices, one for cover within the UK and EU* and one for Worldwide
  • If the equipment leaves the property – if your equipment never leaves your property then this would be cheaper to insure than the equipment you take away from your premises

Why Choose Mode Insurance?

As a creative worker, your equipment is crucial to your ability to work.

At Mode Insurance, we understand the significance of every piece of gear in your creative journey. With us, you're not just insuring equipment, you're protecting your passion.

Cover For Equipment Left In Unattended Vehicles

We provide equipment insurance if your kit is kept in an unattended vehicle only when the items are completely hidden within the luggage compartment, boot or trailer of the vehicle and all security measures on the vehicle or trailer are fully operational.

Theft of equipment or media artwork whilst not under the personal supervision of you or anyone authorised by you must involve:

  1. Forcible entry into or exit from a securely locked building;

or

  1. Assault or threat of violence to any person contained within the definition of you

What is an Unattended Vehicle?

Any vehicle left without a responsible person either within the vehicle or sufficiently close to keep the vehicle under constant observation and able to prevent any attempt by any other person to interfere with the vehicle.

Best Practice

At every opportunity your equipment should be removed from your vehicle, especially at night.

You should try to park your vehicle in a locked compound or garage whenever possible

When unloading, always lock your vehicle in between trips and, whenever possible, have someone stay with the vehicle.

Hired In Equipment Insurance

Our Equipment Insurance could indemnify you for either the repair or replacement of equipment that you have hired in, leased or borrowed if it is lost, stolen or damaged.

Depending on your contract, we will treat the equipment you have hired as if you own it. This means that you do not need to add a separate insured amount for hired-in equipment, it fits within the total sums insured you have under equipment insurance.

We offer up to £50k of cover for all of your important equipment, which includes gear that you have had to hire.

What else should you consider when buying business equipment insurance?

When considering Equipment Insurance for your creative business, it's important to pay attention to a few key aspects:

Excess - consider the excess amount on your policy. If the excess is higher than the cost of replacing your damaged or stolen equipment, then the policy might not offer the best value. It's important to balance the excess with potential costs. At Mode Insurance, our standard excess for Equipment Insurance is set at £350.

Exclusions - be vigilant about the exclusions in your policy. Always review the policy details to understand exactly what is and isn't covered. Typically, insurance policies require evidence of forced entry for theft claims to be valid.

Value of your Equipment - make sure you have an accurate valuation of your equipment for insurance purposes. Keep receipts and take photos of all insured items. Accurate documentation can expedite claim processing and prevent overpaying for coverage or being underinsured in the event of a claim.
