FAQs
Below we have listed the most common questions we are asked by The Seam Makers. If you have a question that is not covered below, please get in touch with us here.
What is Public Liability insurance?
Public liability insurance can protect you if a third party claims that your work has caused injury or property damage.
For example, if a customer visits your studio and trips over equipment, or if you accidentally damage part of a client’s property while delivering an item, public liability insurance can help cover legal defence costs and any compensation awarded.
It is designed to provide protection against unexpected claims that could otherwise have a significant financial impact on your business.
What is technical and portable equipment insurance?
Technical and portable equipment insurance covers the tools and machinery you rely on to carry out your work.
For Makers, this could include sewing machines, specialist repair equipment, cutting tools, pressing equipment, laptops or other portable business equipment.
This type of cover can protect against theft, accidental damage or loss, including when equipment is taken outside of your main workspace.
What is Professional Indemnity insurance?
Professional Indemnity insurance can protect you if someone claims that your professional service or advice caused them financial loss.
For example, if a client alleges that a repair was carried out incorrectly or that your professional service caused them financial damage, this cover could help with legal costs and compensation.
It is particularly relevant for independent professionals providing skilled services directly to customers.
I work from home and have home contents insurance, why isn’t that sufficient coverage?
Standard home contents insurance is designed to cover personal belongings, not business activities.
Most home insurance policies exclude:
- Business equipment
- Customer property in your care
- Claims arising from professional services
- Public liability linked to business activity
If you are repairing customer garments, storing items or running a business from home, you may need dedicated business insurance to ensure you are properly protected.
Does this insurance cover me whilst I am in transport with the Customer’s items? For example, walking to the post office or delivering to their home?
Cover can include protection for customer items while they are in your care, custody or control - including during transportation - depending on the policy selected.
This means that if you are transporting items to the post office, delivering garments to a client or moving items between locations as part of your business, you can have cover in place for accidental loss or damage.
It is important to check the specific policy wording and limits to ensure the cover matches how you operate.
How do I make a claim if something does happen?
If an incident occurs, you should notify your insurer as soon as possible.
The claims process typically involves:
- Providing details of what happened
- Supplying any relevant documentation or evidence
- Cooperating with the insurer’s claims team while the matter is assessed
Mode Insurance aims to make the claims process straightforward and supportive, helping you resolve issues efficiently so you can continue focusing on your business.
Does this cover me if I accidentally damage a customer’s item?
Yes, depending on the cover selected, protection can include accidental damage to customer items while they are in your care.
For example, if a garment is unintentionally damaged during repair or alteration, or if an item is damaged while stored in your workspace, the policy may respond to help cover the financial impact.
Having appropriate cover in place provides reassurance for both you and your customers.
Does this insurance cover my work outside of The Seam?
Yes. The cover is designed to protect you as an independent professional, not just for work arranged through The Seam.
If you undertake repair or alteration work directly for private customers or through other channels, your insurance can apply to those activities as well, provided they fall within the business activities declared on your policy.
This means you have consistent protection across your wider business operations.
